A physical disability does not have to mean the end of the outdoors. Adaptive Adventures has spent more than twenty-five years making sure of it.

Adaptive Adventures
What They Do
Adaptive Adventures runs seven outdoor sports programs year round:
- Skiing and snowboarding
- Cycling — handcycles, recumbent trikes and tandems
- Rock climbing, indoors and out
- Kayaking and paddleboarding
- Whitewater rafting
- Waterskiing and wakeboarding
- Dragon boat racing
What makes the model work is that they come to you. Eighteen mobile equipment trailers carrying more than 750 types of adaptive gear travel to partner sites in over thirty states a year, working with roughly 180 community partners — rehabilitation hospitals, VA centers, park districts and veterans service organizations. Programs range from a single afternoon on the water to week-long camps.
Programs are offered at no cost to participants, and no cost to the family, friends and caregivers who come along. The equipment is provided.
Who They Serve
- Young people — Adaptive Sports for Kids serves ages six to twenty, alongside multi-sport camps
- Adults — the largest group they work with
- Veterans and active-duty service members — through Adaptive Adventure Military Operations, in partnership with more than two dozen VA medical centers and military hospitals
- Families and caregivers — encouraged to take part rather than watch from the side
Their military program holds leadership roles at the Hartford Ski Spectacular, the National Disabled Veterans Winter Sports Clinic and the National Veterans Wheelchair Games.
What It Adds Up To
In 2025 Adaptive Adventures delivered more than 590 programs to over 3,100 participants. More than 100,000 people have taken part since the organization was founded in 1999.
