How buying works

01

Ask

Ask what is in the jar this season, what sizes there are and the price.

02

Pick up

Arrange a pickup, or find out where the family is selling this season.

03

Come back

Honey keeps. If it crystallizes, warm the jar gently and it turns liquid again.

Habe Honey, Co. also makes handcrafted herbal products. Ask the family what is available.

Honey is not for infants under one year old.

Run this business

FOR THE FAMILY THAT KEEPS THE BEES

A small honey business can be run from home: the hives sit on your own land or a neighbor’s, the work follows the season, and the honey sells to the people around you. Start with the hives you have and grow only as fast as you can keep them healthy.

YOUR EQUIPMENT

In the bee yard

  • Hive boxes, frames and foundation for each colony
  • A smoker, a hive tool and a bee brush
  • Veils, jackets and gloves for everyone who works the hives
  • Honey supers to add during the flow
  • A way to check for varroa mites, and treatment on hand
YOUR EVERYDAY WORK

Hive to jar

  • Inspect colonies on a regular schedule in the season
  • Watch for swarming, disease and mites
  • Pull, uncap, extract and strain honey at harvest
  • Jar, label and sell; record every sale and expense
  • Prepare colonies for a Nebraska winter

Rules to check before selling. Nebraska’s cottage food law requires free registration with the Nebraska Department of Agriculture and a food safety course; infused honey is excluded from it, and the published guidance does not say how plain honey is treated, so confirm with the Department before your first sale. A certificate from the Department is needed before you move or sell an apiary or bees.
